Bright, tart, and bursting with fresh citrus. A Thanksgiving classic with a little twist.
There's something about fresh cranberry relish that makes a Thanksgiving table feel complete. The beautiful ruby-red color, the bright citrus flavor, and that perfect balance of sweet and tart make it one of those holiday dishes everyone looks forward to.
Unlike traditional cooked cranberry sauce, this version is made with fresh cranberries, a whole orange, and a crisp apple. Everything comes together in minutes, creating a refreshing, slightly crunchy relish that pairs beautifully with all the rich flavors of Thanksgiving dinner.
Naturally gluten-free and easy to prepare ahead of time, it's one less thing to worry about on Thanksgiving morning. And if you love a little extra orange flavor, a splash of Grand Marnier makes it feel especially festive.
Fresh Cranberry-Orange Relish
Serves: 8–10
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Chill Time: At least 2 hours, preferably overnight
Ingredients
1 bag (12 oz) fresh cranberries
1 medium navel orange, preferably seedless
½ to ¾ cup granulated sugar
1 small Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apple, cored and roughly chopped
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of kosher salt
Optional, but delicious:
1–2 tablespoons Grand Marnier or Cointreau
¼ teaspoon freshly grated ginger
A little extra orange zest for a brighter citrus flavor
Instructions
Prepare the orange. Wash the orange thoroughly, cut it into quarters, and remove any seeds. Leave the peel on for extra citrus flavor, then cut into smaller chunks.
Process the fruit. Add the fresh cranberries, orange, and chopped apple to a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped but still slightly textured. You want a relish, not a purée.
Add the sweetness. Transfer the fruit mixture to a bowl. Stir in ½ cup granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Taste and add more sugar as needed. Around ⅔ cup gives a lovely balance of sweet and tart.
Add a little something extra. If using, stir in the Grand Marnier or Cointreau, freshly grated ginger, or additional orange zest. These optional additions bring a little extra warmth and depth to the relish.
Chill and let the flavors develop. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. As it rests, the cranberries soften, the sugar dissolves, and the flavors come together beautifully.
Serve and enjoy. Give the relish a good stir before serving. Taste once more and adjust the sweetness if needed. Serve chilled alongside your favorite Thanksgiving dishes.
A Few Tips
Make it ahead: This relish actually tastes better the next day. Prepare it the night before Thanksgiving for one less thing to do in the morning.
Don't oversweeten: Start with ½ cup sugar and add more after the relish has chilled. That bright, tart cranberry flavor is what makes this dish so special.
Keep the orange peel: Using the whole orange adds wonderful citrus flavor and a subtle bitterness that balances the sweetness. For a milder relish, remove some of the peel.
Make it festive: A splash of Grand Marnier or Cointreau adds a lovely orange depth. Skip the liqueur for a family-friendly version.
Leftovers are delicious: Spoon leftover relish over yogurt, spread it on a turkey sandwich, or serve it alongside a cheese board.
Storage: Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
